SAGD or steam assisted gravity drainage is a thermal oil production process used to extract bitumen from oil sands.
The process uses two horizontal pipes, one in the ground to provide heat and the other to extract the bitumen. Steam is injected into the upper pipe to heat the oil sands and reduce the viscosity of the bitumen. The bitumen then flows to the lower well where it is collected and brought to surface.
