Total E&P Canada has several operations in Alberta: Surmont (operated by ConocoPhilips) and Fort Hills (operated by Suncor). Both are located in the Athabasca Oil Sands region.
Athabasca Oil Sands region contains large deposits of heavy crude oil and is located in the Fort McMurray area.
Oil sands are a mixture of water, sand, and bitumen which is a heavy highly viscous oil. Bitumen is so viscous that it must be diluted with lighter oils before it can be transported anywhere.
